Periwinkles are evergreen plants with purplish-blue flowers in spring, which spread by rooting stems. Lesser Periwinkle differs from Greater Periwinkle by having smaller, less numerous flowers and more elongated leaves; also the edges of the leaves and calyx are hairless.
