Spurge family (Euphorbiaceae)

Spurges have alternate simple leaves and acrid latex in their stems. Flowers are single-sex, with no petals.
In the spurge genus (Euphorbia), the latex is milky, and the flowers are arranged in umbel-like heads, where the male and female flowers are enclosed in a green bract. In the other genus (Mercurialis), the latex is watery, and the flowers are arranged on spikes arising from the leaf axils.
