Gorse (or Furze) is a spiny shrub which forms impenetrable thickets on heaths, cliffs, pastures and waste ground. In recent years it has become more prevalent on moors, to the detriment of ramblers, due to the reduction in sheep and cattle grazing.
It flowers throughout most of the year, although its peak is in spring, when the sweet scent is noticeable. The pods, once dry, explode with a crackling pop, the valves curling in and throwing out the seeds.
