| Carline Thistle | Daisy family |
| Carlina vulgaris | Asteraceae (Compositae) |
Carline Thistle generally grows on chalky soils. Although the flowers appear to have the form of a standard daisy, namely a central cluster of disc florets surrounded by a ring of ray florets, the outer ring is actually composed of yellowish-brown bracts, which are leafy structures.
