Carrot family (Umbelliferae (Apiaceae))

Flowers in the Carrot family are arranged in compound umbels. Each individual flower has 5 petals (sometimes unequal in size), 5 sepals, 5 stamens and 2 ovaries. This is a difficult family for classification, as many of the flowers look very similar. Distinguishing characteristics include the leaves, and the presence of green bracts or bracteoles hanging underneath the umbels.
This family also includes the fore-runners of garden vegetables, such as carrot and parsnip, and herbs, such as parsley and fennel. Conversely, many of the plants are highly poisonous, such as hemlock.
