Wildflowers: recent additions in Farnham Park

In 2011 we have had some new arrivals in the park, some of which haven't been seen in these parts for many years. Some of the new arrivals are uncommon plants to be nurtured, whereas others are not at all welcome!

Many of the new plants have appeared on the new banks of disturbed ground at Deer Pond created by removing the willows the previous year. These include the dainty yellow flowers of Celery-leaved Buttercup, Nodding Bur-marigold with its drooping flowers and barbed seeds, and the very small Ivy-leaved Crowfoot, which all grow on the water's edge, along with increasing numbers of Water-plantain. Marsh Pennywort has spread within the water, successfully competing with the invasive Branched Bur-reed. Higher up on the bank, Corn Spurrey is flourishing in an unusual location: it is more commonly found on arable land.

A couple of Nodding Bur-marigolds have also been spotted at Carron Pond. Also at the same pond is an unwelcome visitor, reckoned to be Water-Soldier. This invasive plant has spiky leaves (whose tops have been nibbled by the moorhens) and small white flowers: it has already spread quite rapidly. If accessible, the park volunteers may tackle this along with the Reed-Mace this autumn.

Other new arrivals include a White Campion in the White Bottom field (near Bell's Piece), and a patch of Yellow Rattle (illustrated right) between Phoebe's Copse and the Nadder Stream. Yellow Rattle is a semi-parasitic plant that suppresses grass, so the presence of this plant may allow other flowers to thrive in this area.

The two new ponds have had a difficult first year, given the generally low water-levels, with Royal Pond being invaded by Horsetail and Blanketweed.
