Rowledge Ladies had a very good season in 2009, finishing in second place in Southern League Division 2, and thus getting promoted to Division 1.
Following a nail-biting start, when they lost their opening fixture at Gunnersbury by one wicket, their season burst into life with an amazing win at Guildford. Rowledge reached a challenging target of 212 with only four balls to spare, thanks to a superb innings of 90 by Katy Robinson. This started a winning run, where they also comfortably beat Radlett, Shepperton 3 and Redoubtables 2. Apart from two defeats against runaway league leaders Harold Wood, Rowledge had a great run of victories, including double wins against familiar rivals Guildford and Redoubtables, taking them up to third place in the league.
In July, Rowledge had a strong team assembled ready to play Brighton for second place, but there had been so much rain on the Saturday that the outfield was waterlogged and the match was cancelled. However Brighton lost their next match, putting Rowledge up to second place with promotion in sight. Unfortunately with a weakened bowling line-up, Rowledge unexpectedly lost to Shepperton in their last match, where a win would have virtually guaranteed promotion. Fortunately, Brighton lost their last match against league winners Harold Wood, letting Rowledge back into second place.
There were a number of great performances by Rowledge players during the season. The batting award went to Katy Robinson, who scored 98 against Redoubtables, and a crucial 90 in the run chase at Guildford. The bowling award went to Rachel Hillman, who bowled consistently all season, taking three or more wickets in five matches with best figures of 4/8 against Redoubtables. The star individual bowling performance was by Emily Marchant, who took 4 wickets for 4 runs in 4 overs against Radlett. Katie Forward was the most consistent player of the year, coming second in both the batting and bowling averages, and thus won the player of the year award.
